Poor Dental Health and Low Self-Esteem: A Serious Problem Among Teens

A decade back, aesthetically speaking, it didn’t matter much. But in the photogenic age today, they have to be Insta-ready all the time. So, teenagers are more conscious of their dental health than ever.

Are my teeth clean? Is my smile pretty? Does my breath stink? Is that tooth discoloring? Do I have weird teeth position?

These are common questions the 13-19-year old adolescents now ponder often. And the answers, especially if undesired, significantly influence their confidence and self-esteem.

What Studies Have Found?

In fact, a study published in 2017 on “Impact of Dental Disorders and its Influence on Self Esteem Levels Among Adolescents”, concluded

“It was found that various dental disorders like malocclusion, anterior traumatic tooth, tooth loss, and untreated decay causes a profound impact on aesthetics and psychosocial behavior of adolescents, thus affecting their self-esteem.”

But then you don’t have to go through these studies and listen to “experts”.

Ask Them Yourself

Go to your teenage daughter or son and ask them yourself. You will find them too conscious about their dental appearance.

Now, as a parent, of course, it’s your responsibility to navigate them to better habits and treatments for proper oral health.

So, it’s essential that you keep an eye on their dental health and take them to a good dentist whenever needed, or at least once every six-month.

Be Vigilant to Common Dental Problems

Look out for common dental problems and tooth diseases, including tooth decay, periodontal disease, mouth sores, bad breath, tooth sensitivity, tooth erosion, toothaches, fluorosis, discoloration, stains, chipped tooth, and malocclusion.

At the same time, also teach your teens about required dental care and hygiene. If they don’t already, ask them to brush twice a day, floss and use mouth wash after every meal. Teach them about which foods to eat and avoid to intact good oral health.

Be Their Support

If needed, support them in seeking the right treatment. Take them to the best braces specialist in Kolkata. Be by their side encouragingly for their teeth whitening, dental implants, and other cosmetic procedures that they may require.

As mentioned, bad oral health is now a big concern among teenagers, which negatively influences their self-esteem. Interestingly, most of them might not even realize how serious the problem is for them psychologically until they are adult.

As a parent, guide them in the right direction for better dental health and aesthetics. Take them to an experienced dentist Kolkata based to fix whatever problem they have.
